Vegan Inca Trail April 24-30,
2022
After 2 years of covid delays, the stars finally aligned and our 12-member
team, led by amazing guides and an intrepid support crew, hiked the Classic
Inca Trail! After 4 days of strenuous high-altitude uphill treks followed by
often scary descents on narrow, uneven rocky stairs, we reached the Sungate
overlooking Machu Picchu as the sun illuminated its ancient ruins--another
dream come true!

First Snow Experience! Jan
3, 2020
Taking advantage of the first heavy snowfall of the year, Patrick
& I took Cole (5) & Russ (2 1/2) about 3 hours north to Big Bear Lake
for their very first snow experience, which included sledding, a snowman, and
a snowball fight!
On the way there, when Cole predictably expressed impatience with the long
drive, I assured him it would be worth it. He asked, "What does worth
it mean?" I replied, "You'll see." On the way home, he
enthusiastically agreed it was "worth it"!

Whitney Dayhike Sep 10, 2019
Ever
since my multi-day Whitney backpack in 2010 (below), I've wanted to attempt a
one-day summit (~22 miles roundtrip, ~6000 ft elevation gain/loss, average
trail time 16 hrs), and I finally snagged an elusive permit.
Starting around 2 am, I made good time until I reached about 13,000 feet on
the dreaded 99 switchbacks, above which my heart and lungs unexpectedly
struggled to keep up.
But I slowly trudged on, summiting the awesome 14,505 ft peak a month shy of
my 67th birthday!

Vegan Antarctica February 20 - March 1, 2019
For this all-vegan expedition, I assembled a team of 17 adventurers,
including son-in-law Patrick Guera, travel buddies Jim Miersma & Dave
Holland, some San Diego friends, and several delightful U.S. and
international adventurers. Antarctica is otherworldly, like an icy moon of
Jupiter but with abundant wildlife, penguins, seals, birds, & whales!
Aboard ship, we had an exclusive VIP (Vegan Important Persons) dining room
with a wonderful dedicated waiter and a chef who prepared brilliant vegan
meals. This trip of a lifetime exceeded all our expectations!

Israel-Petra April 22 - May
3, 2018
Anita, I, and in-laws Bob & Robin Friedman enjoyed a fascinating 9-day
private guided road trip through Israel. Although this tiny country is a mere
85 x 270 miles at its maximum points, the number of important historical
sites was astonishing. To top off our adventure, we took a day-trip into
Jordan and trekked to the famous "Indiana Jones" rock city of
Petra.

And
Then There Were Two! 2017-2018
On April 19, 2017, to our great delight, grandson Russ joined his brother
Cole, who was 2 1/2 at the time. Their personalities couldn't be more
different: wild & crazy vs. somber & serious (Seri-Russ, but with a
disarming smile!). As he adjusts to this "intruder," Cole
alternates between loving brother and rival for his parents' affection. Enjoy
these brief clips of their delightful interactions! (Last pics were from July

Vegan Kilimanjaro March 1, 2018
Summit
To attempt Africa's highest peak (19,341 ft), I organized a 17-member
international vegan team ranging in age from 18 - 70. Our stunning 82%
success rate was nearly double the 44% average for a 6-day climb,
demonstrating the awesome power of plant-based eating! Afterwards, I met Jim
Miersma, Dave Holland, and JC Corcoran for a week touring South Africa's
Johannesburg & Cape Town. My camera-phone batteries still hadn't
recovered from the cold and altitude on Kili and were having trouble holding
a charge, so unfortunately, I have no South Africa pics or videos to share.

Gen Weinberg - Celebration of Life April
26, 2015
On March 6, our cherished matriarch suddenly passed away from
cardiovascular-respiratory complications. To celebrate her legacy of 87
years, over 140 people gathered at the Weinberg Compound. Their tributes ran
for over an hour, a fitting testament to the goodwill that Mom (& Dad)
had shared with so many others over the years. Now that both our folks are
gone, we are gradually accepting our role as the elder generation. But
memories of our precious parents will live on forever. Mom's Memorial

north to the thunderous Iguazu Falls before heading south to the desolate

From 0 to 100 in a Day!
November 4-5, 2014
On Election Day, November 4, our beautiful grandson, Cole Jones
Guera, entered this world. A day later, November 5, our beloved Aunt Rose
turned 100. How lucky we are to have them both in our lives! Anita was
thrilled to assist Patrick and Rachel in the delivery room while I crashed
overnight in the waiting room with Rachel's biological father, Peter. Then in
mid-November, Mom flew with us to Florida for Aunt Rose's 100th birthday
celebration. Rose was expecting Anita and me, but Mom was a (planned)
surprise and they had a joyful, tearful reunion. Aunt Rose used to babysit my
dad when they were neighbors in New York, and she went on to marry my dad's
brother Joe.

Imagine a cruise where you eat and eat and actually lose weight! That's what
Anita and I experienced on a weeklong cruise of the Caribbean along with
about 1500 other vegans aboard the MSC Divina. Our days were filled with
health lectures (The Big 3: Barnard, Klaper,
Campbell-China Study) and cooking demos punctuated by port visits to St.
Maarten, Puerto Rico, & the Bahamas (rained out). But the best part was
meeting and getting to know so many like-minded travelers. Truly vegan

C2C - Cactus to Clouds April 26,
2013
To challenge myself in my 60th year (16 as a vegan), I solo-hiked
the infamous Skyline Trail from the Palm Springs desert floor to the peak of
Mt. San Jacinto then back down to the tram (21 miles / 10,000 ft gain / 2500
loss). Starting at 1 am, even with a full moon and a headlamp, I lost the
trail several times. Hours later near the peak, hard-packed snow made it
difficult to find my way. With a slow but steady pace and short rest breaks,
it took me roughly 15 hours. I vowed never to work as hard again, but on the
tram ride down, I was already contemplating my next outing!

Elliot Weinberg - Celebration of Life August
11, 2012
On May 29, our dear father passed away from complications of cancer. At 88 years,
he lived a good, long life and gave us ample time to make our goodbyes. He
was a man of honor and integrity, generous with his time, talent, and money.
His smile, his laugh, his jokes, and especially his love were felt by all he
met. In early August, friends and family came together to celebrate his
passing. This short slide show of his life & times will likely elicit
both smiles and tears. He will be greatly missed. Dad's Memorial Brochure

PETA 30th Anniversary Gala September 25,

As longtime PETA members, Anita, Rachel, and I attended this
star-studded tribute to People For The Ethical Treatment of Animals at the
Hollywood Palladium in Los Angeles. Hosted by Alec Baldwin, honorees included
celebrities like Lea Michele (Glee), Eva Mendes, Kellan Lutz (Twilight),
Charo, and Anjelica Huston, as well as everyday heroes for animal rights.
Although not quite as "magical" as the 25th Anniversary Gala that
we attended in 2005 on the L.A. Paramount Studios New York backlot, it was an
inspiring event. https://www.peta.org/blog/thirty-productive-years-one-fabulous-night

Mt. Whitney Expedition August 14 - 20,
2010
I and Sierra Club friends traversed nearly 50 miles of often steep
and rocky trails over a 6-day period. Along the way, we "bagged"
two of California's Fourteeners: Mt. Langley (14,032 ft) and Mt. Whitney (at
14,505 feet, the highest peak in the lower 48 states). It was my most
ambitious backpack in 40 years, and I had the battered feet and boots to
prove it. I've never been completely comfortable with heights, so I had some
fear to conquer. But the experience was life altering. With Whitney under my
belt, new challenges seem less daunting. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mount_Whitney

Portrait of Success Award January 12,
2009
In recognition of her exemplary achievements at Quest Academy,
Rachel was honored with a prestigious award from the Community Day School
Network at their annual statewide conference. She was selected from among
many worthy educators representing about 400 middle and high schools for the
equivalent of a "Teacher of the Year" award!
Quest Academy Graduation June 20, 2008
In summer 2007, having just earned her teaching credential, Rachel was hired
to start a Community Day School for struggling middle-school students. Her
experience teaching in court-ordered schools and her firm-yet-caring attitude
made her the ideal candidate for the job. With a budget, an empty classroom,
and some helpful advice from administrators, she designed a pirate-themed
curriculum that would appeal to 6th, 7th, & 8th graders, then decorated
her classroom to match. Patrick came up with the name, and Quest Academy was
born. Now her first class has graduated!

Mike & Anita Move Downtown October

Retired empty nesters, we downsized from our 4-bedroom La Mesa home to a
2-bedroom San Diego condo (Horizons-Marina District). It was an ordeal
getting rid of 18 years of accumulation, but we love living downtown where we
can walk almost everywhere and something's always going on. The best part: a
